Day 01: Ulaanbaatar

Welcome to Mongolia! Meet your guide, check in, then explore Ulaanbaatar including Genghis Khan Square, the State Opera and Ballet Theatre, the National Museum of Mongolian History, and the Gandan Monastery, the largest functioning Buddhist monastery in the country.

Day 02: Ulaanbaatar - Kharkhorin

Drive west through steppe, river valleys, and rolling hills to Kharkhorin, the capital of the Great Mongolian Empire founded in 1220. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery (est. 1586), the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, with its remarkable Mongolian and Tibetan iconography and sacred dance costumes. Stay at Urguu Ger Camp for the night.

Day 03: Kharkhorin - Middle Gobi (Ongi Monastery)

Drive south to the Middle Gobi on this day, stopping for a traditional BBQ lunch with a nomadic family. Explore the ruins of Ongi Monastery (est. 1660) which was once home to nearly 1,000 monks and 30 temples across both banks of the Ongi River. Stay at Ongiin Nuuts Ger Camp for the night.

Day 04: Gobi Desert (Bayanzag)

Explore the legendary Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) with its striking red rock formations surrounded by Saxaul forests and rich with dinosaur fossils, eggs, and bones. Trek the surrounding desert landscape before settling in at Goviin Naran Ger Camp.

Day 05: Gobi Desert (Gobi Gurvan Saikhan)

Explore Mongolia's largest national park (380 km wide), then descend into Yol Valley, a remarkably narrow canyon where a frozen river runs through the heart of the hot Gobi Desert. Picnic lunch amid the scenery and visit the local flora and fauna museum.

Day 06: Middle Gobi (Baga Gazriin Chuluu)

Drive north across the endless green grasslands of Middle Gobi, passing nomads with their herds of sheep, cattle, and horses. Picnic lunch on the steppe, then settle in at Erdene Ukhaa Ger Camp at Baga Gazriin Chuluu for the night.

Day 07: Middle Gobi - Ulaanbaatar

Scenic drive north through the Baga Gazriin Chuluu basalt and granite mountains back to Ulaanbaatar. Optional afternoon shopping for cashmere and Mongolian antiques, then a farewell dinner of traditional cuisine at Restaurant Modern Nomads.

Day 08:  Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
