Day 2: Ulaanbaatar – Kharkhorin
Travel westward through sweeping valleys and steppe landscapes to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Great Mongolian Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest in the country, framed by white walls and vast skies. Explore intricate Buddhist art and sacred relics before an overnight stay at Urguu Ger Camp.
Day 3: Kharkhorin – Middle Gobi (Ongi Monastery)
Drive south to the Middle Gobi, stopping for a traditional Mongolian BBQ lunch with a nomadic family. Visit the ruins of Ongi Monastery, once one of Mongolia’s largest religious centers, now a hauntingly beautiful site along the Ongi River. Spend the night at Ongiin Nuuts Ger Camp.
Day 4: Gobi Desert (Bayanzag Cliffs)
Journey into the legendary Gobi Desert to explore Bayanzag, known as the Flaming Cliffs for its striking red sandstone glow. Walk among saxaul trees and fossil-rich terrain that once revealed dinosaur remains. Stay overnight at Goviin Naran Ger Camp, surrounded by the desert’s peace and silence.
Day 5: Gobi Desert (Gobi Gurvan Saikhan)
Venture into Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, home to mountain canyons, desert dunes, and rare wildlife. Visit Yol Valley, a narrow gorge where a frozen river shines between rocky cliffs even in summer. Enjoy a picnic in the open desert air before returning to camp.
Day 6: Middle Gobi (Baga Gazriin Chuluu)
Travel north through rolling green plains dotted with herds of horses and sheep. Meet local nomads and share stories over a picnic lunch before reaching Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a granite rock formation steeped in legend. Spend your night at Erdene Ukhaa Ger Camp.
